Erasmus Program
As an effort to strenghten international recognition, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang continues to send students, lecturers, and staff to learn and feel international atmosphere. This has been done by establishing several collaborations, one of which is the Erasmus Mundus program which has become Erasmus +.
Since 2010, UMM partnered with the supra-national organisation of the European Union (UE) to provide opportunities for UMM students, staff, dan lecturers to get Erasmus+ exchange scholarship with a number of campuses in Europe. There are more than 100 students have experienced going abroad at UMM. This program provides tremendous benefits to the recipients. Apart from gaining international experience, they can also develop the ability and independence to live and study in a foreign country.
Learning Express
Cooperation which was built between the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and the Singapore Polytechnic (SP) since 2014, continues to aggresively build the quality of human resources through community service activities. Wrapped in the Learning Express (LEx) program, UMM students collaborate with SP students through the development of Design Thinking (DT) learning. DT is a method that focuses on solving the problems explored through field observations and is oriented towards the creation of a product or program.
International Internship Program
Up to 2019, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Malang has carried out international internships in Thailand for four batches. Since 2015, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Malang has collaborated and sent students to teach in Thailand. The visit of 12 Thai senators (members of parliament) led by General Chavingcuk (former chief of Army staff) on 10 August 2018 to UMM has confirmed the collaboration with Faculty of Teacher Training and Education.
This internship to Thailand is held every June. For the whole one month students carry out teaching practice activities at the school. Students carry out internships at schools that are members of MEDAT (Muslim Education Development Association Thailand), a school organization consisting of elementary, junior high and high school members throughout Thailand. Thanks to harmonious cooperation, each year FKIP sends 45 s / d 55 students from 6 study programs (English Language Educataion, Indonesian Language Education, Elementary School Teacher Education Department,, Biology Education Department, Mathematics and Civics Education) to four provinces in Thailand, namely Bangkok, Satun, Krabi and Songklha.
Through this apprenticeship phase 3 programs, students carry out teaching activities. Regardless their disciplinary background, they will teach English, Indonesian culture and language, scouting, and other extra-curricular subjects. Starting in 2018, these three apprenticeship activities were combined with the education kkn. Therefore, the duration of the program is increased by one month, so that the internships and student Community Service Program ends in August. By combining apprenticeship and Community Service Program, students will be more flexible in designing and implementing community activities. Through this joint program students are able to develop school cooperatives, introduce various regional cultures in Indonesia, such as wayang, angklung, jumput batik and others. There is even a student group that encourages reading and literacy through mobile libraries.
Even though the Internship Program phase 3 and International Community Service Program are bilateral in scope, they have an important meaning for students. Not only related to the school expose, but more to the international atmosphere. Students need to have an international perspective, especially with the implementation of the ASEAN free market since 2015. Like it or not, the world of education is definitely affected by globalization, and students must be prepared to win global competitions including in the field of education.
Through this international apprenticeship, various qualifications as desired by 21st century learning, including communication skills, creative thinking, collaboration and even independence can be strengthened by the students participation in international internships and Community Service Program. For this reason, students participating in international apprenticeships and Community Service Program get sufficient training related to fulfilling the four required qualifications, strengthening the de corp spirit, mastery of Thai language and culture and no less important is mastering mapping for traveling in Thailand. The experience of both the apprenticeship and the Community Service Program education activity in 2018 has won appreciation by the Thai education ministry in the form of "Teacher of the Year". This award was obtained due to the smart work of students in teaching and developing school cooperatives.
This apprentice students have also documented their activities in book form. By reading their experience notebooks, readers can reap the good practices. This book by students of internship program alumni is published for the general public. The book titles are "Bangsaku Kawanmu" for the 2016 edition and "Memories of Thailand" for 2018.
International Community Service Program
Since 2019, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Malang again sent 46 students to take part in international internships and Community Service Program activities. These students are the result of a selection from 100 enthusiasts. The next 46 selected students have been intensively prepared during the month of May. In addition to strengthening qualifications, developing individual programs, strengthening the spirit de corp and mastery of Thailand's territory and culture, to sharpen their independence and social sensitivity are highlighted through the MOR, ICA and NOLL programs.
Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Malang, Dr. Poncojari Wahyono, M.Kes. gave an attention during the debriefing, that this year's participants are expected to not only carry out the program they have prepared. "I hope the participants will be able to captivate schools in Thailand with their superior characters so that they get the opportunity to be recruited as teachers in Thailand after graduating, just like their seniors," was the motivation given to participants in 2019."Being a teacher in Thailand is very promising ... because it does not require certification like in Indonesia and the salary is quite much higher," he concluded.
The Rector of University of Muhammadiyah Malang, Mr. Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd. also stated that he is proud of this international internship and Community Service Program. "I hope this program can be expanded to other countries, thankfully it can be in Europe and America," he pleaded as he provided contact numbers that could be contacted in Europe and America.
