Malang—The third day of the New Student Orientation Program (Pengenalan Studi Mahasiswa Baru, Pesmaba) for the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was packed with vital sessions aimed at fostering character development, preventing sexual violence, cultivating critical thinking, promoting entrepreneurship, and introducing the Student Creativity Program (Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa, PKM). The event, held on September 12, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, engaged new students with meaningful discussions and activities.

Potential Mapping by UMM Counseling Services Unit

The day began with Hudaniah, S.Psi., M.Si., from the UMM Counseling Services Unit, presenting a session titled "Potential Mapping." This session provided students with a comprehensive understanding of how to identify their potential early in their academic journey.

Hudaniah emphasized the importance of recognizing personal strengths and weaknesses to align career paths with individual personalities and competencies. “By understanding their potential, students can better determine their career direction,” she explained. The session also offered practical steps for students to map their potential through campus counseling programs.

Literacy on Preventing and Addressing Sexual Violence by UMM PPKS Task Force

The second session was delivered by Dr. Thatit Manon Andhini, M.Pd., from UMM’s Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (Satgas PPKS). This material addressed the rising concern over sexual violence in educational institutions.

Dr. Thatit elaborated on the definitions and forms of sexual violence, including harassment, verbal abuse, and online gender-based violence. She explained UMM's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for reporting incidents of sexual violence, ensuring students that the confidentiality of victims is guaranteed. “We strongly encourage victims to report and provide supporting evidence. This is the first step for the task force to take action,” she asserted.

The session sparked active engagement from students, who asked questions about the reporting process and protective measures for themselves and their peers.

Student Creativity Program (PKM) by FKIP Task Force Team

The third session focused on the Student Creativity Program (Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa, PKM), presented by Dr. Husama, M.Pd., a representative of the FKIP Task Force. Dr. Husama outlined various PKM categories, including research, entrepreneurship, and community service.

“PKM is an excellent platform for training creativity, innovation, and teamwork skills. UMM students are encouraged to participate in these programs as they provide opportunities to showcase achievements nationally and internationally,” he explained. Dr. Husama encouraged students to actively participate and utilize campus facilities to support their creativity.

Critical Thinking and Entrepreneurship Development

The next session was led by Ode Rizqi Prabtama, S.Pd., M.Hum., an FKIP alumnus now successful in entrepreneurship and education development. His material, titled "Developing Rational and Scientific Thinking, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Entrepreneurial Spirit," resonated strongly with the students.

Ode Rizqi highlighted the importance of critical thinking as a core skill for analyzing information, solving problems, and making sound decisions in academics and professional life. “Critical thinking will help you evaluate information and approach challenges effectively,” he said. He also provided guidance on enhancing critical thinking skills and applying them to entrepreneurial endeavors.

According to Ode, entrepreneurship requires not only creativity but also critical thinking to identify opportunities and overcome challenges, making the session highly relevant to students as they begin their academic and career paths.

Interactive and Inspiring Participation

Throughout the sessions, FKIP UMM's new students displayed remarkable enthusiasm. Each session featured lively discussions and active participation, highlighting the students’ eagerness to engage with critical issues such as sexual violence prevention, self-development, and entrepreneurial skills.

As the third day of Pesmaba concluded, the new FKIP UMM students were expected to embark on their academic journey with a critical, creative, and courageous mindset, prepared to address important challenges and explore entrepreneurial opportunities. (*)
