On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) welcomed a visit from the Elementary School Teacher Education Program (PGSD) of STKIP PGRI Sumenep. The event, held in the 9th-floor hall of GKB 4 at UMM, was attended by 256 PGSD students and 10 faculty members from STKIP PGRI Sumenep. It took the form of a Field Study Seminar themed "The Urgency of Pre-service Teacher Professional Education (PPG) in Career Development as Educators." The seminar aimed to help STKIP PGRI Sumenep students understand the importance of the PPG program as a crucial step in building a professional and competitive teaching career.
The event began with a warm welcome from FKIP UMM Vice Dean I, Prof. Dr. Sugiarti, M.Si., who congratulated and greeted the visiting participants. In her speech, Prof. Sugiarti emphasized the pivotal role of teachers in national education development, particularly in the 21st century.
"Teachers are expected to possess qualities such as creativity, innovation, adaptability, and professionalism to meet the challenges of the times. The Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) is one of the primary pathways to achieve these goals," she stated.
She further added that FKIP UMM, as an excellent educational institution, has long-standing experience and provides various facilities to support the mission of producing professional teachers capable of developing students' potential.
Following her remarks, STKIP PGRI Sumenep Vice Chair II, Dr. Jamilah, M.Ag., expressed gratitude for the warm reception. She hoped the students would gain valuable and inspiring information to pursue further studies in the PPG program.
"Some of our alumni have completed the PPG program at FKIP UMM. Additionally, some of our faculty members are UMM alumni. We are well aware of FKIP UMM's strong reputation as a producer of quality educators. That is why we brought our students here to learn and gain firsthand information," she concluded.
The seminar continued with a presentation by Dr. Iin Hindun, M.Kes., who discussed "The Urgency of Pre-service Teacher PPG." Dr. Iin highlighted that, based on the projected need for educators in Indonesia, the country will require approximately 902,710 teachers between 2023 and 2030.
"One solution to address this shortage is to produce graduates of the Pre-service PPG program. These graduates are expected to fill classroom vacancies left by retiring civil servant teachers. They will also receive 100% affirmative placement to meet the criteria for becoming civil servant teachers," she explained.
Dr. Iin further elaborated on the registration process, curriculum structure, teaching mechanisms, and evaluation systems within the PPG program, emphasizing its role in achieving a balance between the quantity and quality of educators to support effective educational services.
In addition, Moch. Zainuri Amin, S.Pd., shared insights on the implementation of the PPG program at FKIP UMM. He mentioned that FKIP UMM has consistently exceeded the quality standards set by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.
"FKIP UMM has been recognized as a partner institution with the highest graduation rates for madrasah teachers in general subjects from 2018 to 2022. We ensure educational quality by enhancing the competencies of faculty and staff and providing comprehensive learning facilities, such as multimedia classrooms and learning resource centers," he stated.
The event also included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FKIP UMM and STKIP PGRI Sumenep regarding the implementation of future PPG programs. This MoU aims to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions in producing qualified teacher candidates ready to serve in schools across Indonesia.
